Consider this a public service announcement. Rhett Miller will play Van Halen and Prince, but not Butch Walker and Michael Jackson.

You're on the heartbreak list (2009 in review)
In 2009 I saw 291 Performances with 214 different artists over 120 different shows over 99 nights. I saw 138 new acts. They took place in 65 venues in 23 cities in 5 states. I visited 26 new venues. I had 11 doubleheaders where I saw (at least) 2 performances in 2 different venues on the same night. (I'm not counting any of the festival shows I saw) The closest being a tie between Bar on A and Angels and Kings, or Cakeshop and the Living Room. (both are next door to each other!) The furthest between shows was from Red bank to Hoboken. I did see one Triple Header - Bleu and Jim Boggia @ Joe's Pub, Leah Siegel @ the Living Room and Steve Brown @ Shannon Rose in Clifton NJ.
Most popular Acts:
Harper Blynn (Pete and J) - 14
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - 9 (holy crap…where’d that come from)
Mike Viola-8
Aaron Lee Tasjan - 7 (with and without the Madison Square Gardeners)
Jim Boggia - 6
Butch Walker – 6
Total Spent: $2019 Average per performance: $6.94. Average per show: $16.82 There were 96 free performances (Either cause I was working, or a gift, guest list, or just plain free, but most of those free shows at the Living Room & Rockwood they do pass a bucket around so while I’m counting it as a free show, I did count the money I tipped in the above total)
And since this stat always makes me laugh, Actors seen: 4, Adrien Grenier (w/ the always awesome Honey Brothers), Mandy Moore(with the always awesome Mike Viola) , Scarlett Johansson, and Jill Hennessey(who seriously took that Crossing Jordan show to heart, half her songs were about ghosts and dead people!)
And for the first time, Beatles seen: 1, Paul McCartney
Most popular venue to the surprise of no one: The Living Room. Favorite new venue: City Winery. Worst venue: Angels and Kings by a mile.
2009 was the year when I saw many of my favorite albums performed live start to finish.
Dr Feelgood-Motley Crue - Even though I hadn't listened to the album in years I still knew every single beat and every single word. My inner 15 year old self was loving it! Say what you want about Motley Crue (I’d probably say most of it too) but Nikki Sixx is just such a bad ass. Most of their idiotic behavior gets a pass from me….I’d be disappointed if they didn’t act like idiots on a regular basis both on and off stage. Also finally read The Heroin Diaries this year…wow, what a read! Whether you like Motley Crue or hate them, spend a little time with that book.
Darkness on the Edge of Town, Born in the USA (2 x) Born to Run, The River-Bruce Springsteen
Tangent/Rant starts now: At the start of the year I had planned on seeing one or two shows(maybe!) I did not dig the album at all. Also I’m really REALLY over paying such an insane amount of money to see anyone. I ended up at the rehearsal show in Asbury which I’ll always try and go. Then the 2 nights in May a couple of friends were in town so I went to tailgate and see about getting in…which we did(barely) for full price. (Certainly the hardest Bruce ticket I can remember since the Rising MSG show, if it wasn’t such a hard ticket I probably wouldn’t have cared so much about getting in, but there is still a bit of a thrill in the chase.) With the announcement of the stadium shows I decided to not buy any tickets and maybe try for cheap tickets in the parking lot for the last night. Some friends were coming in from all over the place for the Saturday night show (New Hampshire, Minnesota & Missouri) and they all had GA so when one became available I took it. I was really going to go and watch my friends watch Bruce. Is that crazy? Then I agreed to go to the last show with a friend for free. Then the album announcements fall into place and it seems like I’m about to see 2 shows of Born in the USA! So...of course I had to go to Darkness and Born to Run. I did get cheap tickets in the lot $40 GA for Darkness and $50 lower with some friends for BTR(again, higher than I could have paid but I wanted to sit with my friends). After that I swore I was so done with big stadium/arena shows. And then the seatfiller thing for the HOF show came up so I did that (and I’m so glad I did!) and then it was the great scramble for the River show at MSG. I hate to admit it but Jon Landau and Bruce Springsteen played me like a goddamn fiddle this year. End Rant.
That being said…seeing those albums performed start to finish was absolutely one of the highlights this year. It’s nothing that hasn’t been said before but The River especially was just transcendent. It just amazes me how if they just practice a little how great they really can be. I wish he rehearsed them more. I don’t know how repeated viewings of Darkness, BTR or the River would have been, but I was certainly bored at the second BITUSA show I saw, but I’m not sure if that’s the songs or the sameness of it that bored me.
Letters ,The Rise and Fall of the Let's Go Out Tonites, Sycamore Meadows - Butch Walker
This was seriously like a dream come true for me. I’d been bitching for years that Butch needs to play a place with chairs! (I know that makes me sound old, but I’m short and can never see at the venues he normally plays at unless I go up to the balcony, Irving Plaza, Webster Hall I’m talking to you!!) The music is getting further and further away from rock and is more suited to a place like Joe’s or a theatre in my opinion. (Clearly I’m in the minority here since I heard a ton of bitching about how Joe’s sucks) Letters is by far my favorite of the three albums, but was probably my least favorite of the three shows. Maybe expectations were too high, but I think it was the great reworking of the songs from the other two records (on rise and fall especially). I first heard the songs from Letters solo acoustic so it wasn’t anything new for me. On the other hand, Rise and Fall is a big rock record. I really had no idea what to expect. The songs in this new style were so much better than the big loud rock show he did to support the album. It was so over the top with (very bad) backing vocalist/dancers and kind of annoying. Hearing the songs stripped down made me appreciate them like I never had before. I told Butch’s manager JD all this….and then he made me tell Butch. “tell him…tell him what you said about the songs and the record...tell him”. I felt like Kevin Smith at the meeting about the Superman script. It was pretty funny to me. Butch always delivers live and to see him in tiny Joe’s as opposed to Webster Hall was quite a treat.
It was also the year where I saw some really amazing special shows:
Jim Boggia, Pete Harper and Jason Blynn recreated the Beatles 1964 setlist in Philadelphia on the 45th anniversary of their first Philadelphia concert. I don't think I know three people who love the Beatles more or 3 people who sing better together so it was really perfect.
I saw a great Tom Petty tribute in NYC. Members of The Killers, The Strokes, Augustana, The Moldy Peaches, Nicole Atkins, Fountains of Wayne, Jesse Malin etc. It was really great and I felt a little hometown pride with Nicole Atkins leading the “Free Falling” closer with everyone onstage. It’s nice to see a Jersey girl do well, especially since I actually like her music!
This year I went to The Ryman, The Apollo and Carnegie Hall all for the first time within a 2 ½ week timespan. I saw some pretty amazing shows at these venues. The Americana Music Conference Awards with John Fogerty, Buddy Miller, and basically a who's who of Americana Music. Great performances by Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Sarah Borges, and Justin Townes Earle stick out still.
I went to a show at Carnegie Hall to celebrate Gavin Friday’s 50th birthday. Had no idea who he was, but $70 to go to Carnegie Hall and see U2(even if they read the phone book!) is something I had to check out. It was an interesting night and I never thought I’d see Courtney Love or Lady Gaga or Shane MacGowan onstage at Carnegie Hall but I did. (and lived to tell about it!) The night was almost entirely Gavin Friday’s own music, I only recognized a few….the song from In America that the Coors did (Andrea was there) and the song from In the Name of the Father that Sinead O Connor had recorded (I think Maria McKee performed it). U2 played together and with other people, but there wasn’t any U2 music to be heard. The only non Gavin music was Joel Gray doing “Cabaret”, and Lou Reed doing Sweet Jane (with most everyone else onstage) and a show closer of Bowies “Jean Genie” The show was filled out with Rufus and Martha Wainwright…Joseph Arthur…Scarlet Johannsen and a reuniting of the Virgin Prunes (which is a big deal to Ms. Love, but not so much to me) I pick on Courtney cause it’s so easy, but she actually was pretty coherent and didn’t trip once. Her fangirl-ness was interesting to see.
Went to two of the Spectacle tapings at the Apollo and thoroughly enjoyed them to pieces. I went to the “guitar pull” ep with Neko Case, Ron Sexsmith, Jesse Winchester(my new old dude crush!) and Sheryl Crow (who was clearly the lesser of all the people onstage, but I doubt she knew that), and the show with Lyle Lovett, John Prine and Ray LaMontagne. Both were really excellent and if the show continues another season all of you NYC’ers need to get to a taping if you haven’t already. I got to discover some new artists and it was really two of the most interesting nights I’ve spent in forever.
So I was going to try and say what my favorite shows of the year were, but in a year where I saw so many unique events it’s sort of difficult to pick. So instead, a short list of my favorite new discoveries: .
1. The Duke and the King (Far and away the best new band I’ve heard in years)
2. Tim Easton
3. The Films(Someone give these guys a tour please)
4. Dead Rock West (And these guys too!)
5. Joe Pug
6. Reckless Kelly
7. Drivin n Cryin’ (I’ve seen Kevin Kinney a bunch over the years, but this was my first time seeing the band)
